Making Halloween 2020 Spooky and Safe

Halloween 2020 would have been the perfect day, right? Saturday? Check. Full Moon? Check. Sunday to sleep off all the sweets? Even though this year many of us are facing a very different Halloween, we at Swift Direct Blinds, wanted to make some suggestions about ways you can still celebrate the night safely at home. We’re going to focus in this blog on some fun ideas to get things spooky, crafty, and above all safe. One thing that we do all know is that the way to make Halloween 2020 the best it can be is to make wonderful memories with your children.

Plan an indoor Trick or Treat

Trick or Treating is probably one of the best parts of Halloween, we love to get sweets and we love to give them out. This year it’s not as safe to go door-to-door or to handle too many things from other people so once solution is turning your home into a set of trick or treat stations behind every door. Decorating your inside doors and having your kids get to knock on the door and get treats will allow some of the fun within the safety of your home (and even better if it rains!). Or you can take a tip from the Easter Bunny and plan a scavenger hunt where you hide all of the treats around the house and in the garden. This year we’re going to set up clues to where the sweets are hidden to give everyone a fair chance of trying to get their treats.

Create an Online Halloween Party Fashion Show

Getting together on a video chat with your friends and their children is a great way to let your kids dress up and still get to show off their costumes to their friends and family. With so many interactive online games these days its much easier to take Halloween online – including music, party games, and a fashion show to end the whole night. As an added bonus, online parties are much easier to escape than in-person parties and its much easier to involve other friends and family who you might not usually see for Halloween.

Play some Halloween Games and make some Halloween Crafts

There’s so many fun things you can do at home and many games are easily adaptable for Halloween. But if you want to play something that feels more Halloween themed our go-to game is the Mummy Wrap. Take a roll of toilet paper and see who can wrap someone else up like a mummy the fastest (don’t forget to re-use and recycle the roll though! Mummy’s might be monsters, but they’re environmentally conscientious ones).

Halloween trivia quizzes, pin the broom on the witch, pin the spider on the web, or a Halloween ‘feel’ box are other go-to games. We especially like the ‘feel’ box, where you set up different boxes and have the kids feel inside them, without being able to see, and try to guess what’s inside by touch alone. Excellent ‘feel’ ideas are spaghetti (to feel like worms!), peeled grapes (eyeballs!), plastic fingers, or thread (for a spiderweb!).

There’s all kinds of great crafting kits and baking you could do at Halloween many of which are cheap and cheerful upcycles like cardboard toilet roll holders or plastic binbag spiderwebs. From making Halloween themed cards to elaborate cardboard Halloween towns, whatever you make is sure to be a great way to spend time with your family.  You could even send some of the crafts with sweets to friends and family – setting up a trick or treat by post! What’s best of all, rather than just remembering Halloween as a time when they only dress up and trick or treat, your kids will remember some special things they made.

Have a Movie Marathon

Every Halloween we watch at least one film to mark the occasion – usually its Hocus Pocus, The Nightmare Before Christmas, or Casper (Yes, we’re Millenials, how did you guess?). Well, as we’re all trying to stay at home this Halloween, what better than making a film watching marathon? You can even make it a social event by inviting friends to watch the same film with you – starting it on a streaming service at the same time so everyone is watching it almost in sync. And if you’re looking for an adult version, throwing in a drinking game or seeing who can remember the most lines from the film is always a good bet.

Whatever you decide to do this Halloween, we at Swift Direct Blinds hope you have fun and stay safe!
