One of the best ways to help envisage how your room could look is by looking at Google and social media. With this in mind, we’ve looked at Google search data and Instagram and TikTok posts to reveal the most sought-after interior design trends across different rooms in the house.

Taking the top spot is minimalism, with an interior design trend score of 9.02 out of 10. Minimalism embraces quality over quantity and simplicity by focusing on clean lines and monochromatic palettes. To create a minimalistic space, remove clutter, stick to neutral colours, and keep your walls bare by keeping artwork to a minimum.

Cottagecore combines elements of functionality and nature with cosiness and rustic elements. Use soft, natural colours like brown, olive green, and beige, and accent this with lilac, pink, violet, light blues, green, or any colour you can find in a country garden. This warm, inviting space takes second place with an interior design trend score of 8.8 out of 10.

Art Deco completes our top three with an interior design trend score of 8.7 out of 10. Geometric shapes, ambient lighting, and luxury materials like marble, brass, and velvet define Art Deco. It also embraces curvature and is accented by bold colours.

Interior design trends come and go each year, with some new trends and others being revived. But which trends are topping the charts in 2024? We’ve revealed the interior design trends with the most significant increases in Google searches.

Trending more than any other interior design trend is colour drenching, with a year-on-year percentage change of almost 7,000%. Colour drenching is when you paint everything the same, from the walls, ceiling, and even furniture.

Minimaluxe takes second place with a year-on-year percentage change of almost 4,000%. Minimaluxe embraces the ‘less is more’ approach. It focuses on fewer items that are more durable and of higher quality. Minimaluxe moves away from glossy finishes, celebrating natural materials such as wood and linens.

Completing our top three, with a year-on-year percentage change of almost 2,500%, is dopamine decor. Dopamine decor is about vivid colours, clashing patterns, and going all out to create a room which evokes happiness. It’s maximalism at its finest, an opportunity to express your personality through the organised chaos you create.

Bathrooms are one of the most common rooms to redecorate. But what direction are people going with their bathroom renovations? Below, we reveal all.

Floating vanities take the top spot with a bathroom trend score of 7.76 out of 10. A floating vanity can refer to any unit in the bathroom, from sinks and toilets to storage cabinets. They sit above the ground, leaving space between the floor and the unit. They are popular as they make your bathroom feel more spacious, airy, and streamlined.

Modern bathrooms are in second place, with a trend score of 7.56 out of 10. Modern bathrooms are minimalistic and clean, with straight edges and geometric shapes to create this streamlined aesthetic. Wall-mounted mirrors and storage spaces can also help to create a clean look.

The third place is shared between two bathroom trends, wet rooms and terrazzo tiles, each with a trend score of 7.31 out of 10.

Wet rooms are trendy as they can make smaller bathrooms look more prominent and give you more space when showering. They complement minimalistic bathrooms as they appear more streamlined. However, the downside of a wet room is that everything in your bathroom could get wet.

Another popular room to renovate is the kitchen, which can sometimes be the hub of the house. But what’s trending in the kitchen?

Taking the top spot are breakfast nooks, with a kitchen trend score of 8.56 out of 10. A breakfast nook is a seating area in a kitchen with a table. Usually, the seating will be a built-in bench with storage. Corners work well for creating a booth-like feel; they’ll often be by a window, capitalising on natural light.

Country kitchens take second place, scoring 8.53 out of 10. The country aesthetic involves natural wooden elements with pops of colour to evoke feelings of warmth. You can also add houseplants to make the space feel more natural. One essential in a country-style kitchen is the dining table, which should be at the centre of the kitchen.

Completing our top three are kitchen islands, with a kitchen trend score of 8.34 out of 10. One of the main advantages of a kitchen island is that it provides extra storage space for pots, pans, or plates. Kitchen islands can also have seating around it, making it a perfect place to eat or socialise. Whilst they can make a kitchen feel more expensive, the downside to a kitchen island is the reduction in space.

Vintage furniture takes the top spot as the most popular living room trend, with a score of 9.51 out of 10. Decorating with vintage furniture can elevate your living room and help you live more sustainably. It’s a great way to add some timeless pieces which aren’t led by trends.

We’ve looked into the trends with the most significant year-on-year percentage change to reveal the upcoming living room trends.

Taking the top spot are moody living rooms, with a year-on-year percentage change of 85%. Moody living rooms are defined by dramatic lighting, rich colours, and statement pieces to evoke emotions. A great way to create a moody living room is through black furniture, dark walls, and contrasting colours.

Ambient living rooms take second place with a year-on-year percentage change of 67%. Creating an ambience in your living room can be done through warm, neutral colours and lots of natural light to evoke serenity. You can also use texturing through soft throws and fluffy pillows.

Completing our top three are cut-out rugs, with a year-on-year percentage change of 55%. Cut-out rugs are a great way of adding texture to your room and making the floor more attractive.

We used a variety of seeding lists to find trends for interior design, bathrooms, bedrooms, kitchens, living rooms, and blinds.

We used Instagram to find the number of posts with the hashtag of each trend.

We used TikTok to find the number of posts with the hashtag of each trend.

We then used Google Keyword Planner to find the number of Google searches and the year-on-year percentage change for each trend. The data shows figures for between March 2023 and February 2024.

We put the data, separated by each category, into a weighted table, giving each trend a normalised score out of 10. We then took an average of these scores to provide an overall trend score for each category.
