How Well Do You Know Your Neighbours?

At Direct Blinds, we care about everything to do with the home, but if there’s one area that really piques our interest, it’s privacy. After all, blinds don’t just look great but let us easily control how much the world sees of us and how much we see of the world.

With all this in mind, we decided to investigate how well we know our surroundings – specifically our neighbours. Are they firm friends we are fantastically familiar with? Or are they strangers who pass in the night?

Neighbourhood Watch: Our Survey

To find out about people’s attitudes towards their neighbours, we asked responders in cities around the UK and Republic of Ireland a series of questions. These were divided into sections on privacy, security and trust. The results were rather surprising, and you can find them below.

Nosy Neighbours: Looking at Privacy

The question here was: ‘have you ever seen a neighbour naked?’ And the answer? Well, a whopping 60% of respondents in Sheffield claimed to have seen a neighbour in the nude, making it the most likely city for that sort of thing to happen. In fact, the overall results were rather high, with 36% of us admitting to having seen a neighbour naked more than once. Let’s dig deeper into these findings, shall we?

You are most likely to see a neighbour naked if you live in the following areas:

     1. Sheffield 60%
     2. Cardiff 53%
     3. Belfast 50%
     4. Edinburgh 50%
     5. Manchester 47%

There are also shy areas, where you are least likely to spot your neighbour naked, and these are:

     1. Dublin 22%
     2. Bristol 24%
     3. Norwich 24%
     4. Manchester 30%
     5. Leeds 30%

Good Neighbours: Looking at Security

This section of the survey looked at home security, asking: ‘do you always lock your door when you’re at home?’ Overall it revealed that 35% of people would say no to this statement, painting a picture that most of us aren’t particularly concerned about security in our neighbourhoods.

In fact, many respondents said that they never lock their doors when getting home. This gives us an idea of which city’s inhabitants are the least security conscious, which are:

     1. Cardiff 24%
     2. Dublin 22%
     3. Sheffield 13%
     4. Belfast 10%
     5. Manchester 9%

When it comes to always locking the door, the most security conscious cities are:

     1. Liverpool 81%
     2. Birmingham 79%
     3. Glasgow 70%
     4. Norwich 68%
     5. Bristol 68%

Overall, 72% of people in Central England claim they always lock their door when at home, compared to just 22% in the Republic of Ireland. So perhaps neighbours trust each other the most in Ireland!

Love Thy Neighbour: Looking at Trust

We delved deeper into the issue of trust with our next question, which asked: ‘would you leave a key in a ‘safe place’ outside when you go out?’ The findings were that only 26% of people in the UK said they would, in fact, do this.

However, 80% of people aged 65 and over said that they would never do this, compared to just 48% in the 25 to 34 age group, suggesting that perhaps there is a generational divide when it comes to attitudes concerning trust.

The most trusting city, according to our survey, is Edinburgh. Just over half said they would leave a key out and 36% even specified that their hiding place of choice was behind an ornament.

The full list of the most trusting cities, arranged according to the percentage of people who would leave a key in a ‘safe place’, are:

     1. Edinburgh 50%
     2. Cardiff 35%
     3. Manchester 32%
     4. Belfast 30%
     5. London 29%

The least trusting cities, according to our survey and arranged according to the percentage of people who are least likely to leave their keys out, are:

     1. Leeds 16%
     2. Southampton 16%
     3. Bristol 16%
     4. Sheffield 13%
     5. Dublin 11%

Some Neighbourly Advice

The survey revealed much about our relations with our neighbours and told us that, though we may be the United Kingdom, we are certainly divided on a number of issues.

It seems that cities like Edinburgh, Cardiff and Manchester have a lot to teach us when it comes to trust. But perhaps they are too trusting and we should learn from Liverpool, Birmingham and Glasgow – where people tend to always lock their doors.

Maybe the best thing for us to do is to look out of our windows at our own neighbourhoods and decide for ourselves about what’s best to do!
