What are window shutters used for?

Practical, sophisticated, and oh so stylish, window shutters are everything you want in a window covering. Control your room’s light levels, reduce outside noises, and improve your privacy all while looking chic and sleek. Shutters are also low-maintenance as window coverings can get, they need nothing more than a wipe down to keep them looking brand new.

A short history of window shutters.

Window shutters have been around for over 500 years, originally used instead of glass as a cheaper alternative, they soon became a level of sophistication and features to shutters. Instead of just blocking out the light they became a beautiful yet practical housing feature.
As shutters began to be made out of other materials than just hardwood, their popularity grew for their visual effect as much as their practical functions. The invention of shutter blades (louvres) allowed airflow and light into the room whilst keeping out rain. These are the window shutters we know and love today.

Benefits of window shutters?

Not only attractive, but window shutters also have a long list of benefits for your home. Shutters are notoriously low maintenance, only needing a wipe down with a damp cloth from time to time.
Shutters are also well known for their insulation benefits for both sound and heat. When closed they provide a barrier between the internal and external of your home, which is ideal for homeowners in busy areas to keep the noise outside. They also will help you save on your energy bill, they help keep warmth in during the winter which will help you regulate the temperature in your home.
Window shutters not only increase privacy but security as well. You can completely shut out the world by using the louvres or adjust their angle to let in light without compromising your privacy. As they can be used to inhabit people’s views into your home, they are a great deterrent for burglars as they won’t be able to tell if anyone is home or not. A fantastic option for people who live on a busy street.

In what rooms can I use window shutters?

Shutters work well in a variety of rooms, whilst also coming in a variety of styles and colours. From shutters in the bathroom to provide light whilst also allowing for privacy, to living room shutters to keep the noises of the road out or to deter burglars.
You can also choose between cafe style shutters or full-length shutters. Cafe style shutters cover the bottom half of the window only, exposing the top half. They are best used for upstairs windows or tall windows where it’s unrealistic you will get a look through the top of the window. Full-length shutters are the most popular style for ground floor windows as they allow for total privacy. A mix of both allows for a plethora of style combinations.
