What are the UK’s Most Sleep Deprived Train Stations?

The world is a better place after a good night’s sleep, unfortunately for a lot of people up and down the country this is a luxury not often enjoyed during the working week. This is especially true for those people who have to catch an early train as part of their commute to work. For them weekday mornings are often spent bleary-eyed, stood pressed up to a stranger on an over-crowded carriage, while reading the Metro over the shoulder of some fortunate soul who’s succeeded in getting a seat.

But which stations are home to the most tired commuters? We’ve delved into the data* and created a unique index to reveal the answer.

The Findings

The UK’s Most Sleep Deprived Train Stations

London Bridge Station emerged as the UK’s most sleep deprived station thanks to its 42 daily trains** during the early morning rush hour. Operating both over and underground services, the station serves 135,665 passengers daily.
**most popular commuter routes, not total trains leaving station

The UK’s Most Sleep Deprived Train Stations

As the highest placed station outside of London in our rankings, Reading commuters don’t get much use of the snooze button either. However, with a typically longer journey than the central London stations passengers here may have more opportunity to catch up on some much needed shut-eye during the journey.

The UK’s Most Sleep Deprived Train Stations

London as a city dominates the country’s tired train commuters, with five stations in the top ten of our sleep-deprived index. This is in contrast with workers further up North, with a national sleep divide emerging from our research meaning passengers in Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds etc. are far less likely to be falling asleep on their desks. Manchester Piccadilly and Liverpool Central are the sole northern entries in the top ten.

Final Thoughts

For those tired travellers whose daily commutes take them through London Bridge or any of the other stations shown to be the most sleep deprived, remember you can ensure what little sleep you do get is undisturbed with our blackout blinds… just be careful you don’t sleep in and miss your train!

*Methodology

Our research looked at ORR stats on 20 of the busiest rail stations in UK, selecting the top ten most busy as well as stations situated throughout the UK. The research examined:

  • Number of trains on the most popular commutes during rush hour

  • The number of passenger per year

  • The number of passengers per day

  • The number of commuters travelling at rush hour

  • The number of passengers travelling per train

  • The most common routes taken from each station during rush hour

After examining these features Direct Blinds was then able to work out which station has the greatest number of sleep deprived commuters by examining the proportion of early trains to passengers travelling from a specific station.

Direct Blinds then used these figures to create a scale which each station was scored against.

The stations that were examined:

  • London Waterloo

  • London Victoria

  • London Liverpool Street

  • London Bridge

  • Birmingham New Street

  • Glasgow Central

  • Leeds

  • Manchester Piccadilly

  • Edinburgh Waverly

  • Gatwick Airport

  • Brighton

  • Reading

  • Liverpool Central

  • York

  • Paddington

  • Bristol Temple Meads

  • Cambridge

  • Newcastle

  • Cardiff Central
