How to upcycle trash into spooky Halloween decorations

It’s that time of year again, we are talking all things spooky in the office. The nights have started drawing in and we are dreaming of cosy log fires, crisp autumn walks and lots of time spent with our families inside the home.

Halloween is a great time of year that the whole family can enjoy, whether it’s trick or treating, pumpkin carving or binge-watching scary films on Netflix there is lots of fun to be had around this ghoulish celebration.

When it comes to decorating the home for Halloween, we think it’s the perfect excuse to get crafty and creative. We have been getting inspiration from a whole number of different interior and lifestyle blogs recently with the focus being on an upcycling, zero waste approach to decorating.

Recycle your cardboard boxes

Take for example when we deliver your new blinds, we will send them to you neatly packed in cardboard boxes, so once the blinds are hung, you can cut, stick & paint this cardboard to create some spooktacular decorations for around the home.  What a wonderful activity for the whole family, you can really have some fun getting experimental with your scary designs. Bring the outdoors inside

Another great idea for Halloween decorating is adopting a ‘bringing the outdoors in’ approach. We have seen lots of examples of people making autumnal themed centre pieces, wreaths and garlands with cones, sticks and even moss from outside. These can all be collected whilst out walking in the countryside, local parks & even from your garden. This interior decorating style will see you through Halloween and Bonfire Night & give your home a warm & cosy feel.

This style of decorating will also work well between the seasons and can be updated to a more festive feel as Christmas approaches.  Scary ‘C’ word we know, however it’s never too early to start thinking about getting your home for the holidays. Blinds in Autumn colours

As November progresses, we will start approaching order cut off dates for some of our products to be made for a pre-Christmas delivery. With everything else to think about, you don’t want to leave sprucing up the guest bedroom until the last minute. We just love this time of year!

Whilst researching Halloween decorating ideas, we also stumbled across so many interesting Halloween facts & wanted to share a few of our favourites with you.
  • Halloween originated from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, where people would traditionally light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. This festival would mark the end of the summer and the harvest and the start of the cold, dark winter.
  • Going back hundreds of years, people would dress up as saints and went door to door, which is believed to be the origin of Halloween costumes and trick or treating.
  • Halloween in Welsh is 'Nos Calan Gaeaf’…we would love if any of our lovely welsh customers could teach us how to pronounce this one properly!
  • Samhainophobia is the fear of Halloween

Harry Potter

Now with the most tenuous of links between Harry Potter/ witches & wizards/ Halloween, but nonetheless something we are extremely proud of, comes our final spooky-ish themed fact. We supplied grey roller blinds for the Ministry of Magic in Harry Potter & the Order of the Phoenix (2007). If you remember the Ministry of Magic explosion scene in the film…well this picture shows the blinds in all of the windows, just before they were destroyed in the explosion.
