How to choose a colour scheme for your living space

Have you just moved into your first home? Perhaps you’ve been in your house for a while and want to redecorate? If the only thing you know at this point is that you want to revamp the current colour scheme, it can be tricky knowing where to begin.

There is a lot to consider before you commit to a colour, from finding tones that complement each other to ensuring you’re creating a space that you can happily live in. To help you select a palette that works for you, here are some questions to consider.

What room are you decorating?

To begin planning your colour palette, it’s worth considering the room you are focusing on. The intensity of the hue you opt for can impact on the atmosphere. This is because colour can affect our mood.

If you’re updating your living room or kitchen, for example, these are often lively environments where family and friends gather. Therefore, brighter colours are well suited to these rooms as they can reflect the energy of the space and lift the mood.

Bedrooms, on the other hand, are more likely to require soothing shades. Gentle blues and soft purples can be ideal for making the room relaxing.

Are you creating cohesion?

While decorating your home with different colours in each room can work well and reflect the mood of the space, another important point to consider when creating your colour palette is whether you are creating a connection between the rooms.

Picking out one colour and using this as a theme is a good approach to forming the basis of your scheme as this one colour can create cohesion throughout your home.

One simple way to do this is by allowing accessories to highlight the colour you have selected to bring everything together. In rooms where you are keeping walls free of the main colour, you can use throws, cushions and window dressings to hint at it.
