How our Technical Director Katie is upcycling our fabric off cuts to raise money for charity. Get involved too.
Rag Dolls Made Using Our Fabric Off Cuts
At Swift Direct Blinds we like to ensure we produce as little waste as possible when creating all our made to measure blinds.
Whilst it’s hard to ensure zero fabric goes to waste, some people in our company are so creative, that they can turn unwanted scrap fabric into something fun & amazing.
Our Technical Director, Katie McManaman, came up with the idea to use our soft cloth off cuts to create rag dolls and raise money for the cycling charity event she and her friend Sara Mumford are doing next year. The rag dolls you see on the picture are 100% made using our fabric and lining off cuts. Something that was about to go into the bin, has been given a second life and will make someone very happy, how amazing is that? Rag Dolls are only the tip of a very big iceberg when it comes to her charity fund raising though.
Cycle Costa Rica 2020
In addition to making and selling her upcycled fabric rag dolls, Katie & her friend Sara Mumford will also be undertaking a Dream Challenge, ‘Cycle Costa Rica 2020’ where they will cycle from the Caribbean Sea to the Pacific coast of Costa Rica on this amazing, tropical challenge. Along the way they will cycle through the jungle, past 2 volcanos complete with views of lakes & through small Central American villages and towns.
You can learn more about the Dream Challenge here https://www.dream-challenges.com/challenges/cycle-costa-rica-2020/
This challenge allows you to dedicate all sponsorships you receive to a charity of your choice. Katie & Sara have chosen to support Mind & The Samaritans with this cycle challenge, as Katie does with her handmade rag dolls.
The ladies are hoping to raise £4000 for these charities by the time they undertake the challenge next year. This will be raised through bake sales, sponsorship, selling the handmade rag dolls & also a Northern Soul Charity event…we did say she likes to keep busy with charity fundraising!
We are so proud of Katie & all the charity work she does. We will be following Katie & Sara during their training for the challenge and we will be sure to keep everyone updated on their progress when they undertake this next year. How can I get creative with my off cuts too?
Now for the fun part, having seen the images of our Rag Dolls in their funky little outfits & crazy woollen hair we know some of you will be dying to get your hands on some off cuts to make your own personalised little dolls. We are happy to send out a selection of fabric and lining off cuts for any of you looking to have a go at making your own Rag Doll.
We wouldn’t want to limit any creativity though to purely rag dolls and we have lots of examples of other things that can be made with our samples and off cuts. Take a look at the Christmas decorations some of our team made last year. We think these tree decorations, made using our crush velvet fabrics, look absolutely wonderful nestled within the tree. Making fabric tree decorations from off cuts of material is something the whole family can enjoy, the perfect weekend activity in the run up to the holidays.
Whether you are making these rag dolls, Christmas decorations or anything in between, to donate to a charity of your choice or you are just wanting something fun to do in an evening now the cold nights are drawing in, we are happy to send these fabrics bits out for you.

About Mind & The Samaritans
Mind & The Samaritans are two fantastic charities that support people with any mental health issues they may be experiencing. It’s no secret that the pressures of modern living can sometimes be overwhelming for some people and there is an increase in people seeking support for these kinds of issues. We have included links to both pages for more information about each charity, including details of how to get in touch if you feel like you or someone you know would benefit from some of the support they offer.
