Bring Notting Hill Carnival to Your Home

There are few events more vibrant and energetic than London’s Notting Hill Carnival. Its kaleidoscope of colour, rhythmic beats and high spirits are what makes the two-day festival so memorable. From the elaborate costumes to the charismatic Caribbean vibes, you can find endless inspiration. So with summer (finally) here, why not bring some of its energy and flamboyance to your home? Our top design tips can help you transform your space into a vibrant, fun-loving abode.

Clash your colours

Forget what you know and clash your colours on purpose. It may seem radical but coupling unusual colour pairs can give your decor a unique twist. Like the costumes of Notting Hill and other carnivals such as the Holi Festival of Colours and Rio de Janeiro, the more colour on display, the more exciting and eye-catching your style.

Thought blue and green should never be seen? Take the colours into the deeper hues and this clash can work wonders together. A simple dark green blind or curtain can complement electric and royal blue furniture.

Give your room a citrus burst by teaming yellows and oranges with jungles greens. Mustard accessories can work well with tropical green prints, deep teal furniture or viridian walls. Rusty orange and bright tangerine hues can work just as well with green too.

Bring the tropics to your home

Introduce those cool Caribbean vibes to your living space, bathroom or bedroom. From tropical colour palettes to bold botanical prints, this trend can energise your home.

Take inspiration from the tropical flowers and Birds of Paradise-inspired headdresses worn by Rio de Janeiro’s dancers and accessories your interior with vibrant wildlife patterns.

A simple printed cushion or blind can be enough to enliven neutral colour schemes, but if you’re after more of a bold look, mix your prints and throw in a citrus yellow or rainforest green colour for added zest.

And finally, bring the look together with complementing neutral contrasts like limed oak wood for a rustic finish, or black-stained furniture to give an atmospheric mood.

Embrace texture

At first sight, Notting Hill Carnival and its bigger sister Rio de Janeiro Carnival may seem like a sea of colour but look a little closer and you’ll find lots of intricate detailing to pull inspiration from. Feathers, jewels, silks and pattern add depth and character to each individual costume to make them totally unique. Adding texture to your home can have the same effect.

Bring decadence to your room with delicately detailed accessories, like mirror frames or wall hangings. Sumptuously textured items such as velvet sofas or satin cushions can lend a luxurious feel to your interior, while a touch of metallic creates a refined, polished finish.

Use wooden surfaces to add depth and interest—from the subtle grain effect of a made-to-measure wooden blind, to statement up-cycled furniture for a rustic edge.

Take the inside out

An essential part of any festival or carnival is embracing the great outdoors, whatever the weather. Take the look from your living space into your garden with similar colour schemes and a touch of added comfort.

Cushions, blankets, rugs, fence lights and lanterns can bring an intimate and cosy atmosphere to an outdoor space.

Embrace the carnival-inspired theme by taking tropical prints and playful decorations such as multi-coloured bunting and hanging paper pom poms outside.

Bring the outside in

Enjoy summery vibes all year round by bringing the outside into your home. Indoor plants such as  Dracaena and Snake Plants not only offer a tropical feel in your living or sleeping area, but they work to purify the environment, bringing that fresh summery air indoors throughout the year.

Take inspiration from the headdresses worn by the Notting Hill Carnival dancers and choose statement plants with extravagant silhouettes. Majesty Palms thrive as houseplants and can grow up and outwards, making them perfect for filling empty wall spaces.
