When choosing a curtain lining, consider the intended purpose of your curtains and your personal preferences.
Thermal linings are best for energy efficiency, blackout linings for complete light control, and light filtering linings for a softer ambience.
Thermal linings are designed to insulate a room by preventing heat loss through windows and doors during colder months. This type of lining is made from a thick, heavy material, which helps to keep the cold air out and the warm air inside. The thick heavy lining also fills the curtains out beautifully, making them look and feel even more luxurious.
Blackout linings are ideal for bedrooms or any other room where you want to block out light completely. This type of lining is made from a tightly woven fabric that blocks out sunlight and other light sources, creating a dark environment perfect for sleeping or watching movies.
Light-filtering linings are designed to let some natural light into a room while providing privacy. This type of lining is made from a semi-transparent material that filters out some of the harsh glare of direct sunlight, making a room feel more comfortable and inviting.
The length of your curtains will depend on personal preference and if you have any obstructions that may get in the way.
Floor Length Curtains
Traditionally, the most popular choice is floor-length curtains, which typically measure around 84-96 inches long for ready-made curtains. To get the exact floor length measurements to suit your windows, made to measure curtains are the best choice. Your curtain fabric should just touch the floor or finish 1cm above the floor as if hovering.
Curtains above or below the window sill
If you have obstacles getting in the way, such as a radiator or deep windowsill, you could then consider ending the length of your curtain above or below the windowsill.
Pooled Curtains
You can opt for extra-long curtains, that either pool gently on the floor or pool luxuriously on the floor. Pooled curtains can create a more luxurious look in areas where it's practical. We recommend adding an additional 5cm to your curtain length for light pooling; for generous pooling, add 12cm.
