The TV shows we watch with the blinds down

Let’s admit it, we all have at least one TV show that we love to hate. Yes, there are plenty of cultured and high-brow shows that we like and that we’ll openly discuss with friends and colleagues, but behind closed doors, there’s nothing more enjoyable than an evening of trashy TV.

We know these types of programmes are unlikely to win any prestigious awards, but we’re addicted nonetheless. Like secret watchers, we don’t broadcast to others that we watch these shows religiously, but the high viewership figures clearly suggest that we’re not alone in watching these guilty pleasures.

So, which TV shows have people closing their blinds and drawing their curtains before shamefully reaching for the remote?

The UK’s Secret Watching Habits

Here at Direct Blinds, we decided to do some research into the guilty pleasure TV shows that the UK watches secretly. With our survey showing 21% of respondents admitting that they would judge someone purely on the shows they like to watch, it’s no wonder people tend to keep quiet about their love of Jeremy Kyle or Big Brother…

Of the sample of the UK public we asked, 36% of people said they were embarrassed about watching reality TV shows and 22% admitted they closed their blinds or curtains so that neighbours wouldn’t spot them watching shows they deemed to be embarrassing.

With the, ahem, risqué content in shows like Naked Attraction and Embarrassing Bodies having the potential to raise a few eyebrows, we understand why people may want to close their blinds and avoid the neighbourhood gossip!

Guilt-Free Viewing

In contrast to guilty pleasure TV, the shows that we found people were proud of watching included Game of Thrones, Doctor Who, The Great British Bake Off, Strictly Come Dancing and Gogglebox. Instead of being kept a secret by their watchers, these shows were openly discussed with friends and colleagues.

It’s interesting that these shows are considered to be more cultured or high-brow compared to our guilty pleasure picks as the popularity of shows like Love Island are clear. Deep down, we love the unrealistic, crazy plot lines and the larger-than-life characters as they give us a brief escape from the real world and importantly, something that we don’t have to think too hard about after a long day at work.

We might hate ourselves for secretly watching these guilty pleasure shows but really, we shouldn’t be ashamed to admit that we just can’t get enough of them. From our survey results, it looks as though the majority of us watch this so-called trashy TV, even if it’s behind closed curtains! They might be cheesy and cringeworthy but it certainly doesn’t stop us from tuning in week after week.
