How to clean Venetian Blinds

There are a few different types of venetian blinds: aluminium; plastic (synthetic polymers); and wooden venetian blinds (faux and real wood).

All venetian blinds are great for increased light and air control. But they also tend to attract dust, which is why they need regular dusting and cleaning.

Cleaning methods

Before using any cleaning detergents or water, make sure you dust your blinds with a clean, dry cloth. You can use clean, soft cotton gloves to run your fingers lightly across the slats to get into places where duster or cloth can’t reach.

When cleaning wooden or aluminium venetian blinds, always wipe across the slats from left to right in a sweeping motion – rather than up and down. This will give you the chance to remove more dust and grime. It’s also a gentler way of cleaning them.

Aluminium venetian blinds

Once the dust is removed, you can use a clean, damp cloth to wipe any remaining dirt off your blinds. Aluminium and plastic venetian blinds don’t absorb any liquid or water, so you can use detergent and a damp cloth to clean them.

If there are any stains, marks or grease on your venetian blinds, use some water and a clean cloth to remove this. Be very gentle with your blinds and avoid harsh rubbing.

If you want to use special venetian blind cleaner on your aluminium or plastic blinds, always do a test on a small spot of your blind first. Leave it on for 24 hours to ensure it doesn’t damage the material or bleach out the colour.

When using a damp cloth, you will need to avoid moisture settling on the slats, strings or tapes – as well as the operating mechanism – to prevent mould forming.

Wooden venetian blinds

With real wood venetian blinds, always avoid using any liquid or water. Our real wood venetian blinds are made from a type of wood that is very absorbent, which is why any cleaning method that involves liquid is unsuitable as the slats can absorb the water and then warp when drying.

Tools to use

You can also get a special venetian blind slat cleaner brush that wipes dust off your venetian blinds with a single swipe. These venetian blind brushes work well on all materials and are ideal for helping you keep on top of your regular dusting.

If you want to use a vacuum on your blind, pay extra attention when doing so to avoid damaging and scratching the slats or operating cords and chains. Always use a soft brush attachment to vacuum your blinds. Make sure the suction is not too strong as the vacuum may draw the slats down the nozzle, folding and damaging them.
The slats of aluminium venetian blinds are particularly liable to do this, so be careful.

Even though you might find some online instructions saying you can deep clean your venetian blinds by soaking them in water, we strongly recommend not doing so. Submersing them in water can damage the operating mechanism.
