How to Measure For Roller Blinds

When measuring for roller blinds remember that the cloth or fabric width will be 3cm narrower than the overall exact blind width. There is an option to order your roller blind cloth width, but remember the overall width including the brackets will be 3cm wider.
TIP: Side fixing your roller blind - If you wish to side fix your brackets measure the recess as shown in the video, however order as an EXACT size.  This will provide a tighter fit without the 4mm tolerance deducted.  The spring plunger will depress further to allow the blind to fit.

How to measure

You will need a steel tape measure, which is generally more accurate that a wooden ruler or cloth tape measure, a notepad and pen, you may need a step ladder. The first thing you need to do is decide whether you want your roller blinds inside the window recess or whether you want your blind on the outside of the reces to cover the window entirely.

Now check there are no obstructions inside or outside the window recess where the blind will hang, for example look out for handles, part tilling, or windows that open inwards. If you need advice, call us or even send us a digital photo.

Inside the window recess

If you require your blind inside the recess, then you must take three width measurements. Using your steel tape measure measure across the top of the window, now measure across the middle of the window and then across the bottom. The narrowest measurement of the three is the width we call the recess width. Now you need to do the same thing as far as the blind drop goes, using your steel tape measure again measure the drop of the recess, measure the left side, then the middle and finally the right side. Again the shortest measurement of the three is the drop we need, called the recess drop.
The fabric cover on ALL roller blinds is always narrower than the overall bracket to bracket size of the blind, to allow for clear operation.

Outside the window recess

If you require your blind outside of the recess to cover the entire window, then you first need to find out the widest and deepest point of your window recess. You do this by measuring as we’ve previously explained. You then need to add for the blind to overlap the recess, both to the width and the drop. We would recommend a minimum overlap of 10cm each side and the same for above and below. Again always look for any obstructions. Once you have added the allowances you will have your exact blind sizes. Remember on a roller blind the exact width is bracket to bracket. The fabric width is always 3cm narrower.

If you have a wooden baton above the recess, we advise you to measure thins as your exact width, and from the top of the baton to where you want the blind to finish as your exact drop. It’s easy when you do it the Direct Blinds way!
