Number of Panels

The number of door panels that your Shutter has depends on two factors:

The width of the Shutter.
Your own preference.

Below you can see all the panel combinations available to order. Please note that not all the combinations will be available and this will depend on the Shutter width.

You will be presented with layout options for your shutters, where more than 1 panel is used.
You can choose how you would like to orientate the panels, for example "2 R" means the two panels will open to the right, where "1 L - 2 R" means 1 panel will open to the left, where the other two will open to the right.
Note, not all variations are available on every order due to the number of panels varying depending on the width of the window you are covering.

Frame Type

Z Frame

Z Frames are installed at the front of the recess. Select 'Z' frame if your window is more than 15mm out of square. Please note that gaps between the frame and the wall may require caulking.

L Frame

Select 'L' frame if your window is less than 15mm out of square. Please note that gaps between the frame and the wall may require caulking.

What frame option should I choose?

All sides

Ideal for larger windows as this offers the best structural rigidity.

All sides with sill cut

When choosing a Z frame, if you window has a sill, you need to choose Frame option that has a sill cut. The shutter will then come with a flat sill frame which adds support to the shutter.

Left, right, bottom

This is the option to select for the Cafe Style shutter, as these are designed to cover the lower half of the window and means that the top section of the frame isn’t a permanent fixture on the window.

Midrail Height

What are Mid Rails?

Mid Rails are an horizontal structure part of the shutter panel that strengthen the panel and allows you to operate the top blades (louvres), independently of the bottom blades.

Please Note: the measurements of your shutters is based on whether or not a Midrail is required.

Any Shutter Drop below 1500mm does not have a midrail

Any Shutter Drop above and including 1500mm does require to have a midrail

How to measure for Mid Rails?

Measure from the bottom of the shutter to the centre of where you want the mid-rail to be.

The position and size of the Mid Rail may have a variation of 75mm to 110mm.

The midrail MUST be positioned at least 400mm from both the top and bottom edges of the shutter. While it’s commonly centered, you can place it higher up to allow more light through the upper section while keeping the lower portion closed for added privacy.

Select Tilt Rod

What is a Tilt Rod?

A tilt rod is a rod made from the same chosen material as the shutter that connects all the slats together so that you can maneuver them to varying angles as required. The versatile slat movement is one of the shutters most appealing features which allow you to control the amount of light into your room.

There are two ways to operate your plantation shutters:

Visible Tilt Rod

This is the standard option that consists of a tilt rod that is placed in the middle of each panel that you can shift up and down to tilt the blades in to the position you want.

This is a more traditional option, seen on most modern shutter models, and is the more popular option of the two.

Please be aware that you should never open the panel door using the tilt rod, this is for opening and shutting the blades only, and is not designed to support the pressure from opening the doors.

Clearview Tilt Rod

With a discrete tilt mechanism located behind the shutter door, the blades are manually tilted by hand in to the position you want. The hidden option is more contemporary.

This is normally a metal rod, around 38mm from the edge of the back of the panel, near the hinged side. This is then applied directly to the blades, the idea being to provide a 'clear' view through the blades.

However, at some angles, you could still see the edge of this rod at the back.

Louvre Size

Your blade size depends on two things, the amount of light you want to let in and the style you are aiming for.

Smaller blades have a very classic, rustic look. But let in a little less light, due to the number of blades.

Bigger blades offer a modern, bright and bold alternative. With fewer blades needed, they have a distinctive look that complements contemporary styles.
