Christmas Dinner Hacks

Christmas Dinner always has the potential to be quite a stressful meal, at least in terms of preparing & cooking it. Picture the scene- the kids are running riot through the house, you have to cater for lots of different dietary requirements for all the in-laws that have descended & military precision is needed to ensure the timings of each course.

With the big day getting ever closer, we have been scouring through home and lifestyle blogs to compile a list of all the best hints, tips & hacks to ensure your Christmas Dinner goes ahead without any hiccups. We know that minimising the time in the kitchen is really important as you have so many more exciting things to do, such as playing games, scoffing chocolates and sitting in front of the TV watching all the Christmas specials and reruns.

You could say a traditional chaotic Christmas Dinner becomes a ghost of Christmas’ past.

1. Prep, prep & prep.

Wherever possible prep as much as you can before the big day. You can pre-boil the potatoes a day or so before, then they are ready to roast. Stuffing can be made before & reheated. Try going for a homemade soup for your starter, this can be made before the day and chilled, ready to warm up once everyone arrives.

2. Enlist helpers & allocate jobs

To ease some of the pressure it can be a good idea to dish out jobs on the day to ensure smooth running in the kitchen. You can have people washing up, peeling potatoes etc all this will save time & help keep on top of the cleaning. It’s only fair to share the workload as it ensures it’s not just one person banished to the kitchen, missing all the fun!

3. Set the table the evening before

Decorating the table and ensuring everything is picture-perfect can be a fairly time-consuming task, save some time by getting everything set and ready the night before. There’s nothing more satisfying than being able to wow your guests with an impressively laid table & as you will all likely spend hours sat around the table you want it to look just perfect. This is why we recommend setting the scene for your festive feast the night before.

4. Keep the cooking simple

While it might be tempting to start trying new exciting recipes in a bid to try wow your guests, it might be a good idea to predominately stick to some tried and tested dishes. That’s not to say you can’t have a couple of practise runs beforehand if you have seen something new that you think would make a welcome addition to your Christmas feast. When it comes to Christmas Dinner tradition is paramount and people will be looking forward to the classic dishes.

5. Have a boozy tipple ready for your guests on arrival

Get the Prosecco and beers nicely chilled well in advance, this will mean you can offer a drink on arrival, perfect before you start. We have found some great slow cooker mulled wine recipes online, this can be heated before your guests turn up & will stay warm for even the latest arrival. It tastes beautiful and will smell amazing in the home. Also, as it’s in the slow cooker it won’t take up any valuable hob space - win, win.

We love this recipe for the perfect slow cooker mulled wine -
